Tutoring FAQ's

What do I need to be hired?
Tutors are expected to have a high proficiency level in the subjects they are tutoring. They have GPAs of at least 3.5 and are very friendly and great communicators! They are professional, flexible, understanding, and punctual. Most tutors will drive to their students so they need a reliable mode of transportation to their student. Tutors act as mentors with their students to help them with their subject and other problems they may encounter.
CogniTutor students are all ages and study all subjects. Your expertise will affect who your students are, but it is safe to expect elementary through high school age students.
Tutors receive rates based on their location, subject, and expertise. Rates start at $15/hour and can go to $30 or even more. Tutor’s are given a bonus per hour if they need to drive farther.
You can teach any academic subject or musical instrument you know very well.
Tutors and their students pick when sessions are. Typically sessions are 1.5-2 hours once or twice a week.
Tutors and their students pick where sessions are held, but you can have sessions at the school, public location, student’s home, or your home. We recommend public locations such as public libraries, Starbucks, or schools.
Your number of students will depend on the demand in your area and for the subjects you teach.

Tutors send in their resumes containing their major, GPA, tutoring experience, SAT/ACT scores, references, and if they have a car. If they look like a good candidate, then they move on to be tested on their communication, tutoring, are taught our methods and procedures, and are background checked.

Our tutors have our students’ best interests in mind and always try to be helpful and friendly. Your CogniTutor manager will help with the problem. If the problem cannot be resolved that way, then the student will be reassigned to another tutor.

You receive more students if you work well with students. It is better to let your CogniTutor manager know immediately if there is a problem than to get a bad rating.

Tutoring is not just for students who are falling behind in class or need to prepare for a standardized test. Tutoring is also helpful to get ahead in your studies or to learn to learn on your own! CogniTutor specializes in this type of tutoring that you will not get from other tutoring companies.

With CogniTutor, you will learn to be an independent learner (without a teacher!) and these skills can be applied to anything else you learn in the future!

CogniTutor works with all academic subjects and ages. We also have tutors who teach music lessons. Our youngest student has been 3 and our oldest has been 70.
CogniTutor helps students learn their material while learning to learn. Students are matched with a relatable mentor who will help them learn critical thinking skills, reading comprehension, memory strategies, test-taking skills, time management, and improve their weaknesses.
Price varies based on a few variables. Prices are as low as $25/hour. Prices are lower for group sessions and online sessions.
Tutoring can be at your house, school, online or public location like a public library.
When you get tutoring depends on your and your tutor’s availability. We understand that our students have busy schedules so our tutors are flexible.

Tutors are college students who work full-time as learners. They either major in the subject they teach or understand the material and did very well when they took the class. Before working with CogniTutor, they must have at the very least a 3.0 GPA.

Most of the time, our tutors are in the Honors College which makes them some of the smartest in their universities. If they tutor a standardized test, then they are at least in the 95th percentile.

Students sign up, are assigned a tutor, given an email and text message reminder for the session, are sent a session report describing what happened during the session and what the homework is, and charged for the session.
Students learn at different speeds so they have different needs. Typically, we suggest 1.5 hour long sessions once or twice a week for the length of your class. If you are preparing for a standardized test, you may need 4 months of tutoring. Music lessons are typically 30 minutes long.
Score increase depends on how much work you put into learning. Our students increase them most when they are attentive during tutoring, complete their homework, ask their questions, and attend tutoring every week.
We have not had any students complain about online tutoring. In fact, students like the online tutoring option because it is so convenient and affordable!

Both types of tutoring have their pros. Individual tutoring is great because students get one-on-one attention and can move through the material at their own pace. Group tutoring is sometimes preferred because students have study partners to help them learn the material and the tutoring is more affordable.

Progress can normally be measured by test scores and assessments. Sometimes students need to go back to the basics, which isn’t what they are tested on.

In these cases, it may be difficult to measure progress since students need to learn the basics before learning material they are tested on. Please reach out to your tutor or CogniTutor if you have more questions about this.

CogniTutor offers scholarships and has partnered with organizations to provide funded tutoring to veterans and foster children. Even if a student is not sponsored, our rates are very affordable
Our tutors are college students so they are the experts of learning. Some of them have these learning disabilities and learned first-hand different strategies that work for them.

Your tutor will go over your homework with you and ask if you have any questions. Then, you will learn new material and practice it with your tutor to help you feel comfortable with the new material.

While learning the new material, your tutor will show you how to approach it and different strategies to memorize it. You will have a break halfway through the session to give your mind a break. At the end, you will be assigned your homework.

Your tutor will be picked based on your specific needs. He/she will be an expert in the subject you need help with, will be close by, and free during your available hours.
Our students love our tutors because they are college age so they are relatable, fun, and act as mentors or older siblings. Our tutors plan sessions to involve students’ interests and use real life examples to teach. Sessions can include games and videos that keep students interested and learning!

If you would like our tutors to work with teachers at school, then they are willing. Sometimes tutors receive assessments, suggestions, and grades from teachers so tutoring sessions are more effective.

Yes! During the first session, we will complete a pre-assessment and will take the same assessment during the last session. This helps us keep track of how much our students improve during tutoring.
We ask that you cancel sessions before 12 hours in advance. This allows your tutor enough time to find another day or time to reschedule your session. Cancelling within 12 hours of the session will result in you being charged for half of the session. If you do not show up to the session, you will be charged for the whole session.
Our tutors do their best to help students and make the session enjoyable. You will get a call after the first session to see if you have any questions or concerns. If you have a problem that cannot be resolved with the tutor, then you will be reassigned to another tutor.

CogniTutor has partnered up with different organizations to provide the best opportunities for our students. These partners include nonprofits to provide funded tutoring to students such as foster children.

CogniTutor has also partnered with the Veteran’s Affairs to provide funded tutoring to veterans. CogniTutor works closely with schools and school districts to help as many students as possible.
